The Passage to Sitka

The Inside Passage of both Canada and Alaska supply endless channels and fjords to explore and wander.  With this in mind we have pulled out the maps and decided to add an incredible new route to our Dangerous Water Adventures for 2022!  This route will add new destinations including; Haines, Hoonah, Elfin Cove, Pelican, and Sitka! Below is your adventure itinerary but remember, everything is subject to change.

 

DAY 1

  • JUNEAU, ALASKA – PETERSBURG, ALASKA
  • 137 Miles
  • 7:00am Departure time
We will meet in the lobby of the Ramada Hotel in downtown Juneau for transfer to the docks of Aurora Harbor. Today the crew will travel down Stephens Passage, around Cape Fanshaw, and into the marine rich waters of Frederick Sound. This passage provided ample opportunities to view Humpback Whale, Orca, Stellar Sealion colonies, and Pacific White Sided Dolphin. We will arrive in Petersburg, Alaska midafternoon.

DAY 2

  • LE CONTE GLACIER
  • 60 Miles
  • 10:00AM DEPARTURE TIME
It does not matter have many times you may have visited a glacier; NOTHING is like the experience you will have a Le Conte Tidewater Glacier! The crew will meet in the morning and depart for the steep walled fjord filled with icebergs and pupping Harbor Seals. As you carefully weave your watercraft through the mine field of floating ice make sure to look among the high ridges to catch a glimpse of Mountain Goats grazing on grassy outcroppings. Today will blow your mind!

DAY 3

  • PETERSBURG, ALASKA – KAKE ALASKA
  • 70 Miles
  • 10:00AM DEPARTURE TIME
The team will meet on the docks in the morning for departure to the native village of Kake, Alaska. Kake is a small village of less than 400 people living on the edge of one of the most beautiful coastlines in all Alaska. Depending on the route your guide decides the safest for passage you will either run up Rocky Pass of an area where we see Humpback Whales bubble net feeding frequently! When you arrive in Kake a pick up truck meets the crew and everyone piles in the back for the short ride the Patty’s house!

DAY 4

  • KAKE, ALASKA – SITKA, ALASKA
  • 141 Miles
  • DEPARTURE TIME WEATHER DEPENDENT
The crew will prepare for departure in Kake waiting for calm waters on the route. Sitka is just over 140 miles away and our transit will expose the team to the swell of the open Pacific Ocean for a short period of time. The coastline is nothing less than spectacular with huge sheer cliffs and beautiful dense forests. The team will have to be on the lookout for extensive kelp beds and jagged rocks just below the surface. This passage is truly unique and a must for the adventure enthusiast. Our final destination of Sitka was the capital of the Russian settlements when Russian owned the land we today call Alaska!

DAY 5

  • SITKA, ALASKA – HOONAH, ALASKA
  • 160 Miles
  • 7:00AM DEPARTURE
The crew will prepare for departure in Sika waiting for calm waters on the route. Althoug the team will be riding through fairly protected waters over half of the passage today, special attention needs to be paid to the winds in Chatham Strait. Chatham Strait is prone to north winds and the earlier the departure the more likely winds will be light. Our ultimate destination today in the small native village of Hoonah, Alask.

DAY 6

  • HOONAH, ALASKA – HAINES, ALASKA
  • 110 Miles
  • 6:00AM DEPARTURE
Today you will be traveling up the final body of waters the pioneers of old traveled in route to the gold fields of the Yukon Territory, the Lyn Canal. The mighty Chilkat Mountains rise sharply from sea level upwards of 12,000 feet and the winds can come ripping down the sides of the mountains and make passage up the Lyn Canal impossible. Your guide will be watching and forecast weather to ensure a safe passage.

DAY 7 & 8

WE HOLD IN RESERVE TWO WEATHER DAY ON EACH EXPEDITION. THIS DAY COULD BE SPEND AT ANY ONE OF OUR DESTINATIONS OR BACK IN JUNEAU DEPENDING ON WEATHER. ALL TRIPS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE FOR WEATHER CONDITIONS.
